VMware/Knoppix/Math HowTo
Booting options
After the BIOS screen is displayed, a booting menu is displayed and you can
choose an appropriate one by using up-arrow and down-arrow keys. To
modify the selected configuration, press 'e'. To edit the command line
options, choose 'kernel' and press 'e'. The editing commands are much like
those on UNIX or Windows.
Here are several important options:
- lang=name
Set the language, the keyboard and the timezone. Examples of name
are ja,cn,de,da,es,fr,it,nl,pl,ru,sk,tr,tw,us.
- noregen
On each booting operation, 'ldconfig' and 'depmod' are executed, which
take rather long time. These are necessary only after a new
application is installed and we can skip them by adding 'noregen' to
the command line. Note that these commands can be executed by hand
after booting the system.
- xscreen=rowxcol
Set the screen size to the specified value. If the specified size
is not listed in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then the setting is void.
After editing the command line, press 'enter' to fix the change
and press 'b' to boot the operating system.
If you want to change a menu entry permanently, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst
after booting the system.
Setting keyboard
If you want to change the keyboard setting, click the flag icon at
the bottom-right of the display several times until you find your
favorite one. You may also have to change the keyboard model.
This is possible by clicking the flag by the right mouse button
and invoking the configuration tool.
Suspend and resume
You can suspend the virtual machine by pressing the close button at
the top-right of the VMware player window. To resume the suspended
virtual machine, simply invoke it from the player. This is very useful
when you have to shutdown or reboot Windows.
File sharing with Windows
1. Execute penguin->services->Start samba
2. Attach \\knoppix\samba as a network drive from the EXPLORER.
Enter 'knoppix' for both username and password.
Then you can read and write the directory '/home/knoppix/samba from Windows.
Note that the machine name 'knoppix' is valid only if the network setting
is 'NAT'.
